|Title||William and John Bartram printed material|
|Scope & Content||
Letter one is dated 1-21-1907 is 1 sheet with writing on 2 sides. Fleming has written to Clarence B. Moore about FHS to solicit items for the collection. In the letter, he states he will donate a copy of Travels of William Bartram. This book is still in the FHS Collection of rare books. He promises more donations--Fleming seems to be looking for "antiquities" as well as books. It was written from house boat Gopher, Ft. Myers.
Letter 2 was written 2-4 1907 from St James City, Fla. It is 1 sheet folded with writing on 4 sides. He obviously enjoys the descriptions of Florida in Bartram's book.. He mentions John Batram's book in which he mentions finding bison in Florida on his visit to the state. Mentions Jeff Wymans of Peabody Museum's book and suggests that FHS also obtain that volume.
There are also two typed letters with letter head of First National Bank of Fernandina from Fred. W. Hoyt, both addressed to F.P. Fleming, head of Florida Historical Society in Jacksonville.
Letter 1 is dated 11/28/1906 and answers Fleming's inquiry if George Fairbanks (historian and 1856 founder of FHS) has left anything to FHS after his death. Mr Hoyt says he has not and that he left his historical books to the University of the South. Also mentioned is whether he may obtain the original of the "Ordinance of Secession" from Mrs. Naylor Thompson.
Letter 2 is dated 12/18/1906 and again mentions Mrs. Taylor and his unsucessful attempt to get the original Ordinance of Secession for FHS. There is a hand written note about grandmother of Rosa Galpin and how the tried to get her to join FHS.
