The Phelps journal is about 100 pages with hand drawn illustrations of life in camp. The journal starts on May 14th,1838 and there are daily entries through August of 1838. Phelps was very well educated, a graduate of West Point and quotes literature in French & German. He was in the 4th Artillery which was ordered out of Florida to assist with Cherokee removal
Entry of May 14th provides a summary of the Second Seminole War. Phelps comments on weather and topography. He is very detailed in description and very free with his opinions.
