Clearlake Junior High School opened in the fall of 1959. It continued as a Junior High until the name was changed to Clearlake Middle School in 1974. The 50th anniversary of the school was celebrated on Nov. 13, 2009, and the school was closed in 2012 as a result of budget cuts. Memorabilia was donated upon the closing and includes annuals from 1961 - 1978, along with special programs and reports. The 24 folders in the collection include newspaper articles, etc. listing school administrators and faculty, clubs, music, arts, and sports programs. A folder titled "Missile" contains articles, photographs, and information on "How to Acquire a Missile for Your School", written by Principal Clyde Stevens, telling the story of the erection of the full-sized surplus Navaho missile on the front lawn of the Clearlake Rockets in November 1959. Another folder contains copies of the Vapor Trail, the newspaper publication of the school. Copies of annual reports, student handbooks, Florida school reports are included. A large Clearlake Middle School flag and a basketball uniform are in the collection, along with DVD's and programs of the 50 year celebration. |
